Movies (Ten Favourites)

Page history last edited by Maureen 1 yr ago

Bringing Up Baby (1938) This is a very funny movie classic starring my favourite actress, Katharine Hepburn, and one of my favourite actors, Cary Grant. The movie is about a pet leopard called "Baby" and hilarious circumstances involving the two lead actors and the leopard. It's usually referred to as a "screwball comedy" and one that I never tire of watching.

The Philadelphia Story  (1940) This is another old movie starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant plus another great actor, Jimmy Stewart. This is a fun (and very funny!) movie to watch. If you have never seen it, you are in for a real treat.

Mr. Holland's Opus (1995) This is a lovely inspirational movie starring Richard Dreyfus. It shows very clearly how important a dedicated teacher is and how many lives he can change.

Erin Brockovich (2000) This ia a dramatic movie based on a real person and about a very serious subject - a power company accused of polluting a city's water supply - with Julia Roberts portraying Erin Brockovich. A truly unforgettable story.

Steel Magnolias (1989) This movie is both very funny and very sad. The characters are all wonderful strong women, portrayed by some of Hollywood's best actresses: Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Darryl Hannah, Olympis Dukakis, and Julis Roberts. It's a film for women and about women and absolutely wonderful. I never fail to laugh and cry no matter how many times I watch it.

As Good As It Gets  (1997) I love this movie despite the fact that I don't really like Jack Nicholson. I have to admit that he is outstanding in this movie. This movie is very funny and very touching. It's well written, well acted and very entertaining.

French Kiss (1995) I didn't like this movie the first time I saw it and then I happened to start watching it again one evening and I loved it. Go figure. Anyway, this is a romantic comedy that really is romantic and funny - unlike so many movies that are called romantic comedies but aren't. I think it's one of Meg Ryan's best movies. It also stars Kevin Kline (as a French man!) and it's filmed in Paris. A real delight.

Meet Joe Black  (1998) This is a poignant fantasy movie that appeals to me because it's a sweet romance but it's also about the meaning of life and death. It's a difficult movie to describe but I always feel very moved by it - and I've seen it it five or six times. It stars Brad Pitt and the great Anthony Hopkins.

Beetlejuice (1988) I love this movie! It's zany, quirky, silly, and absolutely ridiculous but it makes me laugh. It's hysterical. Michael Keaton is just wonderful in his role as Beetlejuice. Somehow you know that a movie that's listed in three different genres (comedy/fantasy/horror) is going to be worth watching and it definitely is!

Bend it Like Beckham  (2002) This movie is both funny and inspiring. I'm not a sports fan and I certainly don't follow football (soccer) but I love this movie because it's charming and it makes me feel good. It's about two very strong characters - young women who just happen to be from different ethnic backgrounds but who both love playing football and are very good at it.
